CES (the Consumer Electronics Show), where tech company giants and new startups unveiled new products in the year to come, was held earlier this month in Las Vegas. Highlights include a huge breakout of wearables, ranging from a virtual reality headset with the Crystal Cove, fully immersing your gaming experience, to smart baby onesies called The Mimo Baby from Intel that might be the baby monitor of the future.

Intel may be in the talks with Verizon to hand over its Web TV Project.

Apple releases iOS 7.1 Beta 3, tweaking the interface and also acquires rapid-fire camera app developer SnappyLabs.

Facebook has developed a new mobile A/B testing framework, Airlock, which will help improve user experience on its mobile apps.

Microsoft announced they will be releasing the next generation Windows, "Threshold," in spring 2015, and is still on the search for its new CEO.

Google is teaming up with Audi, GM, Honda, Hyundai and Nvidia to bring Android to cars as early as this year.


Setting out to simulate all rainbows found in nature wound up with an "almost complete picture of how rainbows form." UCSD alumnus, Iman Sadeghi, his advisor CS professor Henrik Wann Jensen, and scientists from Spain, England, and Switzerland, published their findings in ACM Transactions on Graphics in December. Monday, January 13th:

CRUSH Your Coding Interview With Facebook! At 7:00 - 8:30 pm in CSE 1202, Facebook is hosting a workshop to go through all the tips and tricks to best prepare you for your next coding interview, including working through real interview questions live. Engineers will be on hand to answer all of your questions, and of course pizza and prizes per usual.

Resume Workshop: How to Ace Your Resume! Want to know what kind of resume will catch Facebook attention? Bring your resume to CSE 1202 at 1:00 - 3:00 pm and find out!

Interested in getting paid to do research over the summer here at UCSD? Have a passion for research, but need to find a way to pay for rent or other research-related expenses? Apply to the Summer Undergraduate Research Scholarships (URS)!

You could be awarded up to $4,000 to do research with a professor on campus this summer. To help you learn all about this program, there will be an additional 2 workshops on how to Apply for the Summer Undergraduate Research Scholarships (URS), a reprise of the ones held on Nov 19 and 20, 2013. If you did not attend and were interested in learning more about the application process, or just wanted to talk to someone about your application, please come to one of the sessions:

Friday, Januaury 31st:

Microsoft Scholarship Program Deadline! By applying to the Microsoft Scholarshi p Program, students may be eligible for full or partial tuition for the 2014-2015 academic year! Students must be currently enrolled full-time in a bachelors degree program in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico, pursuing a degree in CS or a related technical discipline , and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 or 4.0/5.0 or higher.
